Ferris debuted in publishing with her 2017 graphic novel <em>My Favorite Thing Is Monsters<\/em>, a coming-of-age story of Karen Reyes, a girl growing up in 1960s Chicago.\u00a0 The book is written and drawn in the form of the character&#8217;s notebook. <em>My Favorite Thing Is Monsters<\/em> was heralded as a &#8220;masterpiece&#8221; by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/robsalkowitz\/2017\/01\/27\/how-this-unlikely-monster-is-about-to-transform-graphic-literature\/#1e85ccc661d6\">Forbes<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/aux.avclub.com\/my-favorite-thing-is-monsters-is-a-brilliant-eye-openi-1798258797\">The AV Club<\/a>, among others and has garnered numerous awards, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2017\u00a0Ignatz Award\u00a0for Outstanding Graphic Novel for\u00a0<i>My Favorite Thing Is Monsters<\/i><\/li>\n<li>2017\u00a0Ignatz Award\u00a0for Outstanding Artist<\/li>\n<li>2018 Lambda Literary Award\u00a0for LGBTQ Graphic Novel for\u00a0<i>My Favorite Thing Is Monsters<\/i><sup id=\"cite_ref-pw_10-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/li>\n<li>2018\u00a0Eisner Award\u00a0for Best Writer\/Artist<sup id=\"cite_ref-11\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/li>\n<li>2018\u00a0Gran Guinigi Award for Best Graphic Novel<\/li>\n<li>2019 Grand prix de la critique\u00a0<a title=\"Association des Critiques et des journalistes de Bande Dessin\u00e9e\" href=\"https:\/\/www.acbd.fr\/?fbclid=IwAR3mvfQyZGbt8AEXPkgKeqV6UGHMA5pa-8oplNo9NdLDUT2cSN-E1HB6LQQ\">ACBD<\/a><\/li>\n<li>2019 Fauve d\u2019or at\u00a0Angoul\u00eame International Comics Festival<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/spinweaveandcut.com\/about\/\"><strong>Nick Sousanis<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is an Eisner-winning comics author and an assistant professor of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/humanitiesliberalstudies.sfsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Humanities &amp; Liberal Studies<\/a>\u00a0at San Francisco State University, where he is starting a\u00a0Comics Studies program. He received his doctorate in education at Teachers College, Columbia University in 2014, where he wrote and drew his dissertation entirely in comic book form. Titled\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/spinweaveandcut.com\/unflattening\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Unflattening<\/a><\/em>, it argues for the importance of visual thinking in teaching and learning, and was published by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hup.harvard.edu\/catalog.php?isbn=9780674744431\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harvard University Press<\/a>\u00a0in 2015.\u00a0<i>Unflattening\u00a0<\/i>received the 2016\u00a0American Publishers Awards for Professional and Scholarly Excellence\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/proseawards.com\/winners\/2016-award-winners\/#body\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PROSE Award<\/a>) in Humanities, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.psu.edu\/story\/405155\/2016\/04\/19\/arts-and-entertainment\/penn-state-announces-winner-lynd-ward-prize-graphic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lynd Ward Prize<\/a>\u00a0for best Graphic Novel of 2015, and\u00a0was<em>\u00a0<\/em>nominated for an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.comic-con.org\/awards\/2016-eisner-award-nominees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eisner Award\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.comic-con.org\/awards\/2016-eisner-award-nominees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">for Best Scholarly\/Academic<\/a>\u00a0work.
