{"id":619,"date":"2016-11-14T10:49:45","date_gmt":"2016-11-14T15:49:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.comicsforum.msu.edu\/?p=619"},"modified":"2016-11-14T10:49:45","modified_gmt":"2016-11-14T15:49:45","slug":"2017-keynote-speakers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/comicsforum.msu.edu\/?p=619","title":{"rendered":"2017 Keynote Speakers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Michigan State University Comics Forum is proud to announce not one, but <strong><em>two<\/em> <\/strong>keynote speakers for our 10<sup>th<\/sup> Anniversary event to be held on the final weekend of February 2017.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/comicsforum.msu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Sturm800-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-862\" src=\"http:\/\/comicsforum.msu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Sturm800-1-300x220.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/comicsforum.msu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Sturm800-1-300x220.jpg 300w, https:\/\/comicsforum.msu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Sturm800-1-768x564.jpg 768w, https:\/\/comicsforum.msu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Sturm800-1.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our Creator Keynote Speaker, James Sturm, has garnered many awards for his work including a Xeric grant, an Eisner Award, and Time Magazine\u2019s Graphic Novel of the year. He\u2019s also a founder and teacher at the Center for Cartoon Studies and has worked for a number of comics publishers including Marvel Comics, Fantagraphics, First Second Books, and Drawn and Quarterly to name but a few.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/comicsforum.msu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/hatfield800-300x220.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-864\" src=\"http:\/\/comicsforum.msu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/hatfield800-300x220-300x220.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"220\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our first Scholarly Keynote Speaker, Charles Hatfield, is the\u00a0author of\u00a0<i>Alternative Comics: An Emerging Literature\u00a0<\/i>(2005) and\u00a0the Eisner Award-winning\u00a0<i>Hand of Fire: The Comic Art of Jack Kirby\u00a0<\/i>(2011),\u00a0as well as many\u00a0articles and book chapters. He is co-editor of\u00a0<i>The Superhero Reader\u00a0<\/i>(2013) and\u00a0<i>Comic Book Apocalypse: The Graphic World of Jack Kirby\u00a0<\/i>(2015), and curated the US&#8217;s largest-ever Kirby\u00a0exhibition at CSU Northridge in 2015.\u00a0A longtime contributor to\u00a0<i>The Comics Journal\u00a0<\/i>and\u00a0<i>The Jack Kirby Collector,\u00a0<\/i>Hatfield\u00a0has been writing about comics for more than twenty years. At CSU Northridge, he teaches courses that specialize in comics, popular culture, and children\u2019s literature.\u00a0Hatfield has served on the boards of the International Comic Arts Forum and the MLA Forum on Comics and Graphic Narratives, and is the founding President of the Comics Studies Society.
